Chapter 14

Fifteen minutes later, we were sitting in a booth at a little place called The Lunchbox Diner, waiting for our waitress to bring us our drinks and come back to take our order.

“So, what made you want to eat here?” I asked.

We’d passed three other restaurants on the way, but Jax had been insistent on eating here at this particular diner, for some reason.

“My family and I used to come here a lot... many moons ago.” There was a distant look in Jax’s eyes. “They have good food. I think you’ll enjoy it.”

“Okay.” I shrugged, eyeing the menu one last time. I’d already decided on the bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado sandwich with onion rings. I love me some onion rings. “So, where has your family lived besides Utah?”

“A little bit of everywhere,” Jax replied as he thumbed through his own menu, clearly avoiding eye contact with me. “We’ve lived in the West, the Southwest, the Northeast, the South, Central.”

“Ugh,” I said aloud. “Why do you always do that?”

He glanced over at me sharply. “Why do I always do what?”

“You never answer my questions with direct answers, ever. It drives me freakin’ crazy,” I blurted, deciding to cut straight to the chase. There was no point in keeping it bottled up inside. It annoyed me, and he needed to know that.

“I’m sorry. I don’t mean to—” Jax started to say, but I cut him off.

“Are you sure? Because it seems like you put a lot of effort into not answering me.”

“It’s just that certain things are more difficult for me to talk about than others,” he explained.

I waited for him to elaborate on it, but he didn’t. Before I had the chance to question him, our waitress was heading back over to our booth, tall glasses of sweet tea in hand.

“Are you two ready to order?” our waitress, a short woman with dark hair named Maria, asked, pulling a pen and a notepad out of her apron.

“I’ll have the double bacon cheeseburger with fries,” Jax said.

“And how would you like that cooked?” Maria asked.

“Medium rare.”

She nodded and scribbled down his order.

I opened my mouth to tell her my order when Jax said, “And she’ll have the bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado sandwich with onion rings.”

I tried not to let my jaw hang open.

Maria nodded and wrote down my order, too. “Okay, I’ll be back with your food in a few minutes.”

Once she walked away from the booth, I glanced over at Jax. “What was that all about?”

“I like my burgers medium rare.” He shrugged as he took a sip of his tea.

“Not that,” I said exasperatedly. “I prefer to order my own food. I have a mind and a voice of my own. I can speak for myself.”

Jax nodded. “Duly noted.”

“How did you even know what I wanted? I didn’t tell you.”

“Yes, you did. Right before you asked me where I’ve lived besides Utah.”

“I definitely didn’t. I’m sure of it,” I said, although I was beginning to question my own memory.
